Preface to the 2nd Edition of
The Periodontic Syllabus
A Reference Manual for Diagnosis and Treatment

This Manual of Clinical Periodontics 2nd Edition has been written as a quick reference for practicing general dentists and dental hygienists. It may also be used as a refresher course by dentists entering advanced dental education programs in periodontics. With the increasing interdependence of periodontics and prosthodontics in treatment planning, the Manual will also provide a basic, yet essential, knowledge of periodontics for clinicians engaged in the practice of periodontal and implant prothesis.

The Manual stresses patient-centered evidence-based diagnosis, treatment planning, and accepted modalities of therapy. It also emphasizes the notion that the goal of periodontal therapy should satisfy the needs of the patient for a lifetime of health and comfortable function.

The Manual is a practical resource for both clinical and educational settings. Each chapter is presented in a "frequently asked question" format with bulleted, stepwise, straightforward approaches to basic principles of peridontics, periodontal diseases, diagnosis, and options in therapy.
