Preface to
Atlas of Minor Oral Surgery

Oral surgical procedures are an integral component of modern-day dentistry, and no clinician can successfully practice his or her profession without a basic understanding of surgical principles and procedures. Atlas of Minor Oral Surgery was conceived and written to address and help elucidate the surgical area of dentistry.

The word “minor” in the title of the book is not meant to minimize the degree of importance and complexity of the surgical procedures outlined in the text, but rather only to convey that these are surgical procedures—from endodontic to periodontal surgery, as well as implant and third-molar techniques.

We hope that Atlas of Minor Oral Surgery will fill an important niche and become useful not only to the dental student but also to the practicing general dentist as well as the surgical specialist.

The book is designed to provide useful day-to-day clinically applicable information without a great deal of extraneous esoteric knowledge. In addition to acting as a surgical manual and guide, Atlas of Minor Oral Surgery provides useful information on antibiotics and sedation techniques and a review of local anesthesia—all clinically relevant and timely information. It is also our hope that Atlas of Minor Oral Surgery will be kept in or close to the operatory for “real-time” use and information, so that it becomes the “go-to” book for all things oral surgical in nature.

Finally, and perhaps most important, in addition to developing good technical surgical skills, the clinician must maintain a compassionate, kind, and caring attitude, for that is often all that our anxious patients will remember.
