About the Editors of
Antibiotic and Antimicrobial Use
in Dental Practice, Second Edition
Michael G. Newman, DDS, is adjunct professor of periodontics at the UCLA School of Dentistry. An active scholar and lecturer, he has published more than 250 journal articles and abstracts, coedited four textbooks, and delivered lectures on a wide variety of topics throughout the world.
A diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and past president of the American Academy of Periodontology, Dr. Newman is also an active member of the NIDCR and the ADA. A longstanding associate editor for the International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants, he was recently named editor of a new journal, Evidence-Based Dental Practice. Dr. Newman has a stong interest in applied science and the transfer of new technology for practical use. This second edition brings together many of his insights and observations for improving patient care.
Arie J. van Winkelhoff, PhD, is professor of oral biology and head of the Department of Clinical Periodontal Microbiology at the Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). He also serves as honorary professor of periodontology at the Eastman Dental Institute and Hospital in London.
Dr. van Winkelhoff's main research interests involve the application of microbiology in the diagnosis and treatment of oral infections, the use of antimicrobial agents in the treatment of periodontitis, and the treatment of halitosis. He has authored or coauthored more than 120 scientific articles, and he serves on the editorial boards of six international journals in periodontology, implantology, and microbiology. A well-known lecturer throughout Europe, Dr. van Winkelhoff has received two international awards for his contributions in periodontal research and education.
